Why Ford Is Adding Thousands Of New U.S. Manufacturing Jobs

AOL Autos -- Ford Motor Co. has a pretty nice holiday gift for the U.S. economy and job market: The company plans to invest $6.2 billion to expand its U.S. manufacturing base, a move that will help it save 3,240 existing jobs and add another 12,000 positions by 2015.

A large portion of the of the investment will go into the automaker's home state of Michigan, which will see the addition of 2,350 new jobs.

"These investments, many of which are already under way, will ensure our southeast Michigan manufacturing facilities can support our aggressive growth plans," said Jim Tetreault, the Ford vice president in charge of North American manufacturing.

Ford's investment in additional U.S. manufacturing will cover an array of auto parts as well as vehicle assembly plants.

Good cars, Good trucks, Good sales, Good for Michigan, Good for local workers - Invest in the US and wait for the 'returns' to roll in. Michigan is a right to work state - cheaper local labor to be had. They never took a dime of bailout money, choosing instead to gut it out on their own. Now they are leading the way for the National economic recovery by this massive infusion of jobs. Good for them. They are a great company founded by a great and innovative man. Not only does the US need this, so does Michigan, very much.

Henry Ford paid his workers $5.00/day when GM paid their workers $1/day, hence they were the last auto maker unionized. Ford did better small cars than the competition, and they invested in their company when others were happy to buy stuff (GM, why buy Hummer?). They went deep into debt, but survived with their reputation intact (no forced bankruptcy). "Right to work?" Possibly coincidence, possibly intended, more likely planned ahead by the Koches and Michigan Republican Governor "Rick" Snyder so as to buttress his popularity. Sign the bill, hope people connect the dots you want them to connect, and reap the benefits. As for plants making multiple models, that's been happening since at least the early eighties. The machinery to make it where you could put out a truck, a car or an SUV at any time in the production day needed further development of computers, machinery and workplace flexibility. That's why Buick City no longer exists – the workers proved unwilling to deal, and GM decided to close instead of invest.
