Shell Arctic Drilling Plans in Doubt

Rig Zone -- Shell's plans for a second summer of drilling in the Arctic Ocean are in doubt as the company says it must tow its two Arctic drilling rigs to Asian ports for repairs.

Officials of Royal Dutch Shell PLC haven't made a formal decision about drilling in the waters off Alaska's northern coast this summer, but it appears unlikely the Kulluk, a drilling rig owned by Shell and operated by Noble Corp., and the Noble Discoverer, which Shell was leasing, will be able to return before drilling can resume in July.

The Kulluk ran aground on an uninhabited island about 300 miles southwest of Anchorage on Jan. 1 after ships towing it to Seattle for the winter lost control of the rig during a storm. It was freed from the shore and remained afloat, but damage to the hull and electrical systems

Shell tried to tow their drilling rig out of Alaskan waters (and into a storm) to avoid paying Alaskan property taxes on it. Now they have millions in repairs and losses as a result. Corporate greed meets incompetence.

I think Shell grossly under-estimated the severity of conditions in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, and the logistics of supplying the rigs and maintaining the crews... Shell also grossly OVER-estimated their own abilities in the Arctic.

It is a lot cheaper to have them repaired in Asia. Those pesky asians don't think oil is evil. As a matter of fact, they are wiling to pay more for it than we are.

"Obama is allowing this?"

And what would you recommend President Obama do? Should he dictate to a private foreign corporation? Should he nationalize oil companies? It's not clear what you want him to do.

Interesting article. The rigs are one of a few that can withstand the harsh conditions of the Arctic.

There is a glut of oil in the countyr. So why drill in remote locatins now. They will save it for later.

Arctic drilling is not a good idea. The weather is going to be a very costly problem and if ever there is a spill, it will be damn near impossible to clean up.
