Shale oil surge poses threat to renewable energy, PwC warns

The Guardian -- Green groups warn against huge shale oil risks as report finds it could comprise 12 per cent of oil production in 2035

A worldwide expansion of relatively cheap shale oil could put investment in renewable energy and global emissions targets under threat, as well as posing other environmental risks.

The shale oil industry is still in its infancy, but has the potential to reach up to 12 per cent of global production, potentially pushing down oil prices by as much as $50 per barrel by 2035, according to a new report by consultancy firm PwC.

Lower oil prices are more likely to extend production rather than simply increase it, but this could make alternative low carbon technologies less attractive, Jonathan Grant, director of sustainability and climate change at PwC, told BusinessGreen.

Your welcome Pops!

The truth is that few GB's have the cajones to submit articles that don't follow their doctrine to a T-bag.

You are very welcome Cakes! And thank you Cakes! Posting an article that exposes the real reason for the witch hunts on hydraulic fracturing is a great step toward admitting the truth.

If it was that much of a threat it couldn not be that good in the first place.

From the article: "However, the report also notes that cheaper oil could displace production from higher cost and more environmentally sensitive areas such as the Arctic and Canadian tar sands, while tax windfalls could provide finance for carbon capture and storage and other low carbon technologies."

Here is an idea, tax the Obama's on their non-business travel to vacation spots. 40 cents per gallon on jet fuel would be a good start. Then we will see if he puts HIS money where he wants to put ours. No exemptions fo BS speeches being considered business.

It seems oil production has increased substantially yet we are paying record high prices for fuel.

Personally I don't like the process of Fracking.

There is vast amounts of fresh water underground.

Fracking not only uses vast quantities of clean drinking water it threatens to poison fresh underground water supplies.

This will ultimately result in huge health care costs imho.

The stored energy of millions of years of fossil fuels will always be cheaper than any attempt to capture energy from feeble breezes and weak photons in the near term. It is the difference between atomic energy and burning fall leaves in the street...

And there we have it. All along the Eco-Imperialists have been spreading fear and paranoia in the attempt to slow oil and gas production to protect their greedy "green" investments.

Thanks for posting this Cakes!

Green doesn't want this and has Obama in their pocket so he will find ways to keep green energy artificially cheap using our taxes...so it competes with oil, even cheaper shale oil.

Yet Obama will also find ways via regulations and prevention of cheaper delivery of shale oil through pipelines to keep gas prices high so green energy still looks viable even when it is not!

They have us used to paying high prices and they know we will pay whatever they charge because we have to get to work and life goes on. I don't see much chance of prices going below $3 a gallon since they are nearing $4 a gallon and more right now.

Cheap only when you discount the high risk to water supplies as this "surge" grows.

Yes, the greenies want high priced oil so their investments in alternative energy sources may be increased. If the alternatives are so good they better be affordable.

This has nothing to do with environmentalists.
Our government says they want us to use less oil. They encourage high prices to make that happen. Look to your elected representatives.

As long as gas and diesel prices are high, there is market for shale oil.
Fossel fuel prices keep going up. ergo will be more shale oil pumped.

History says Big Oil companies will continue their high profit tactics.

We need all the energy options. Right now the shale is taking off, and if that means the alternatives take a back seat, then so be it. Their time will come when it is economically viable.
