Natural Gas-Powered Vehicles Gaining Steam

North Central PA -- As this year’s presidential election has come to close, and the political season passes, now is the time for our elected officials to come together and work collectively towards common sense solutions toward meeting our nation’s growing challenges — job creation and energy security, chief among them.

In Pennsylvania, where enormous amounts of clean-burning American natural gas continue to be safely produced, these homegrown resources are increasingly being leveraged to power of growing transportation needs. Not only do compressed natural gas (CNG) powered vehicles provide significant cost savings for consumers and businesses, but the environmental benefits are undeniable.

with more manufacturers moving toward CNG, price of CNG will increase, but might still be worth looking into.

You are correct about the home filling station, @nightworker998, but it's not a clear cut solution. Natural gas used in residential homes has impurities in it like water vapor that can corrode fuel tanks and fuel lines. The natural gas at commercial filling stations already filter out any impurities.

Plenty of homes already have gas lines, @vernsimpson and you don't hear about daily stories of homes blowing up. If you smell gas, open the windows and call the gas company.

This is VERY good news. Natural gas sems to be the energy of the future and considering the overabundance we currently have (if it isn't all shipped overseas that is), it makes perfectly logical sense. Now all they have to do is buld up the infrastructure to support them.

Oh and CPGas1815, that is a very selfish attitude you have there. We should all be deprived of an excellent engery source just because YOU have to pay a few extra dollars a month for your gas heat. Shame on you.

Actually, @Bigglz1972, someone's already invented a car that runs on compressed air. It's range isn't great but any air compressor found in a repair garage can pressurize the air tank and air heats up when it's compressed so there's your hot air.

If fracking is as safe as the natural gas industry claims, perhaps insurance companies can offer fracking insurance for the drillers. A small annual premium could protect them from huge penalties if fracking fluid migrates into the water table.

Once again I am dead set on not using natural gas to power vehicles. As my home is heated by natural gas any increase in demand will increase my winter heating costs substantially.

It's gonna take a long time to switch all of those oil burning furnaces over to natural gas because converting is not cheap, @DR4URRV. Plus, for years, natural gas prices fluctuated wildly so homeowners had no way of budgeting their heating costs. Here in New York, the dirtier heavy fuel oil is being phased out and regular fuel oil has much less sulpher than it used to just a few years ago.

It would be great if someone made a dual-fuel furnace that could switch between natural gas and oil, depending on fuel prices.

There is plenty of crude oil as well, and prices are high. What makes anyone think that once we are on CNG that the same will not happen.
