NHTSA Wants Hybrids, EVs to Be Noisier

Design News -- In an effort to make streets safer for pedestrians, the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a rule that could require engineers to add more sound to hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs).

The proposed rule, a follow-on to the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2010, would likely require that automakers add external speakers to hybrids and EVs. NHTSA estimates that such speaker systems would add about $30 to the manufacturing cost of the cars, but could prevent about 2,800 injuries over the life of each vehicle model year.

It sounds nothing like a motor. Think of George Jetson and you get the idea of the space ship type sound. The faster the car is moving the higher frequency the sound is. The only place it can be heard is in tunnels or pulling into the garage. It is total BS having it, but there is a plug and a place to plug that harness into other than the speaker. Must be for other countries that don't require it yet all the Prius harnesses are the same to save money rather than having special harnesses for different countries.

Create more noise because some people don't look where they are going. I have had no problem hearing hybrids and EV's, the tires rolling on the pavement make noise. If they want noise, how about putting rocks inside the hub caps (a cheap fix).
