Diesels, Turbochargers Power Chicago Auto Show

Design News -- Coming less than a month after the auto industry's biggest exhibition in Detroit, the recent Chicago Auto Show had a distinct flavor all its own. Instead of hybrids and electric cars, Chicago's get-together featured diesels and turbochargers.

Chevrolet stole the show with the rollout of its new, diesel-powered Cruze, while Volkswagen took a cue from the past by introducing a peppier version of its classic Beetle GSR. Not to be outdone, Nissan rolled out two cars derived from its Motorsports division and Toyota unveiled a redesigned version of its well-known Tundra truck.

I'm not sure why diesel power isn't more popular. It could be the water infiltration problem, the high cost of diesel itself, the need for special injectable fluids to some models, the gelling problem in winter cold, the fact that some states require a special license to drive diesel vehicles, some states have add-on fees for diesel, some states require special plates or registration, the smell or that diesel isn't available at all fueling stations or at all hours. Little things like that...

Coming to a GM truck soon as well. Saw a couple being tested in the Loveland Pass area of Colorado last September. Sure sounded funny.

YOU buy a diesel. I'll drive in front of you. Anyone in Alaska want a diesel car? For that matter, anyone in Alaska want to buy an Electric Car? A Hybrid either? That's what I thought:)
