as for me, the majority of my electric bill comes from fees. The actual cost of electricity (currently still on the grid) is about 1/3 of the bill, which is about $75/mo. That's heating/cooling, cooking, cleaning, etc. an 1800 sq.ft. house. Yes, it's extremely energy efficient and we pay attention where things can be done to not waste. Much of American electric bills are inefficient insulation and straight up non-thinking wastefulness.

the costs of early electrification are forgotten, so it's not fair to even compare new / renewable energy sources to the old electric system (which could still be a lot more efficient).

Once again, things get more expensive once the government gets involved.

Utilities could install smart meters and charge more during peak hours, like they do here in Ottawa...

From the article: "The system of only allowing rate increases after a lengthy hearing, keeps the costs hidden from the consumer for longer but increases costs to the utility and, ultimately, the consumer, due to interest charges on the borrowed money."
==================================================================
Nothing like "openness" and government in the sunshine. Me thinks that most often "government" IS the problem, so a return to the Constitution would greatly alleviate the compounding of problems given to US.

Higher efficiency requires an initial investment and then the return on the investment pays back the upfront costs plus a return on the investment. Plus higher efficiency conserves natural resources for future generations and it helps clean up the environment.

I can remember when future nuclear energy was touted as being so cheap that it wouldn't be worth it to meter it.

One day, we'll learn how to elect politicians who are really there for the public benefit, and not their own or big business as we have now. Then this might stop.

Governments setting an arbitrary standard that is not derived from true market forces? That never happens!
Setting artificial levels of renewable energy is counterproductive. What a way to punish the people for special interests. Is making 20% of electricity from renewable sources really going to change anything to do with climate change? (which we also have been lied to) These people who are using government to push their agenda should live out in nature, hunting and gathering for food, shelter, and clothing. Instead, they want to drive around, using iPhones and heating/air conditioning like the rest of us. What a bunch of crocks.

The energy is very cheap to free. Capturing the energy in a usable form is expensive. If the economics supported most renewables, why are above market prices paid for the energy? Why is the use of renewables mandated by law? We need an honest discussion of an energy policy and it's costs to make an intelligent choice and not be deceived into choosing one side or the other based on misinformation.

Somebody has to pay the cost for the development of renewable energy. It will be either the taxpayer or the consumer. Which there really isn't much difference when you stop and think about it.
