gs: driver probably did what he was told to keep a job that's not paying a lot. Company boss(es) need to be getting a kick in the tail so hard they land in the slammer.

the disregard for the paying passengers on the part of the company is appalling. Hopefully some crackdown on this type of slavery (bus drivers as modern wage slaves) will happen soon. Not the first deadly bus crash. Sadly, won't be the last one either.

Sad...and it could have been prevented, but both the company and driver were feeling pressured by our economy. Fix Washington politics!

When I drove a cab, our company would tell us in no certain terms to go home. This was on a daily basis. Our hours were watched carefully to meet Government regulations. This driver might have been pressured into driving or whatever but the company will pay, one way or another.

I guess I have seen that, the relief driver drives a car to the change point, having started at the same time the bus left.
But they are only driving the bus the regulated hours.

In most cases, the company forces drivers to work a lot extra. However, there are some drivers who do these many extra hours to make more money. TBoth these ituations should be stopped. Should be enough staff on hand to do the job.

some people have jobs where they can get away with 60 hrs/week, others need a definite 40-48 hour limit..

That's the norm for many in the transportation business these days. Cab drivers are expected to work 72 hours, or more a week. Of course their pay doesn't reflect the hours worked.

90 hrs in 8 days in not excessive that is 11.25 hrs per day I know many people that work 12 hr days weneed to wait for the facts to be weighed on excessive speed & road conditons.

The hours worked don't seem that excessive - and I doubt illegal for a professional driver. Whether he was driving appropriately for the conditions is another matter, likely to be argued by accident reconstruction experts, although the bus may have had some gps logging too that would shed a lot of light on speed, if not conditions.

Glad 38 folks survived. Nine did not.
Ambulance chasing lawyers found two that are lining their pockets.
"...the bus driver doubled as a tour guide and worked at least 90 hours without relief over the first eight days..."
I don't know what regulations are, but that does not mean the man was sleepy or working too long. That is an avg of 11.25 per day. Depends on how that was spread out and many other factors we don't know.
Going too fast on slippery roads may have been the thing that he could not handle.

The driver obviously has the most culpability. Did the company try to prevent these violations?

Obviously, there are regulation already un place, so it is definitely the responsibilty of the tour company that their drivers & guides adhere to them. Good luck to the survivors with their lawsuit. I'm assuming the driver is also being held criminally liable.
