Audi to build new hydrogen and natural gas production facility

Hydrogen Fuel News -- Audi reveals plans for new fuel production facility in Germany

The auto industry has become enthralled with hydrogen fuel. Most of the world’s major automakers, such as Daimler, Toyota, and Hyundai, are currently developing a new generation of vehicles that are equipped with hydrogen fuel cells. These companies have plans to commercialize these vehicles beginning in 2013. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are not the only thing the auto industry is interested in, in terms of hydrogen fuel. German automaker Audi has revealed plans for a new hydrogen fuel production facility that is expected to be built in Germany.

New facility will generate synthetic natural gas from hydrogen fuel and CO2

Interesting. Germans are good at innovating. Don't see this as a major player at all however.

Will it be cost effective to produce synthetic natural gas from hydrogen fuel and CO2?

They can have it! Natural gas is a poor fuel for running vehicles.

If you had bothered to read the above Nemo, it is being done in Germany! Please take the time to read first and spout later.

It is because, unlike fossil fuels, hydrogen is an abundant and renewable form of energy. The NG will not last more than this century.

The technology is interesting but the problem of where to get the hydrogen still remains. It's too energy intensive to get it from water. Makes more sense to just use that electricity to charge electric vehicles.

The most cost effective way is to reform natural gas but it might be more cost effective to just run a regular internal combustion engine off of CNG.

Plus, hydrogen has the same problem as CNG when it comes to storing it in pressurized fuel tanks but hydrogen requires even greater pressure than CNG.

"New facility will generate synthetic natural gas from hydrogen fuel and CO2" it is extremely expensive to do this, and why, when the U.S. is sitting on an ocean of natural gas?

Let them pay the R & D in Europe. If it becomes cost effecive we can begin production here.

Why would they want to produce synthetic natural gas? An internal combustion engine can just as easily burn hydrogen in the engine as burn CNG.
