Hopefully they do have a trick up their sleeve, and are not just overly confident in the intended trend of these types of vehicles.

With any luck, they can improve battery only range while continuing to bring the price down.

What does GM know? That they've got the perfect patsie in the White House, ready, willing, and able to shovel taxpayer dollars into their overpriced, underperforming electric vehicles. Obama can tell the government and the military to buy these POSes at full retail prices [via non-competitive, single-source bids].
Obama can up the private purchaser rebate from $7,500 to $10,000 to sweeten the deal. So much for "level playing field".

They know they will never reach the new CAFE standards set by the EPA to take effect now through 2025 without electric vehicles and hybrids being a significant part of the fleet.

To reach an electric transportation environment the auto makers need a reasonably small power source that will travel at least 400 miles before recharge and a method of recharging that takes no more than 10 minutes to fully recharge. Until that is achieved they are destined to fail.

We will either be in an endless world-wide recession with high unemployment growth, unchanging gas prices and flat EV/PIH growth, or we will see increasingly high gas prices with >0% EV/PIH growth. I don't see how oil/gas prices can fall in a healthy economy unless a natural or man-made catastrophe kills off a significant portion of the population.

Way old. They don't know anything. That's why they had to take our money, to stay in business. Thumbs down to GM.

Making the Volt a baseline gives GM an excuse to lose $40,000 on every one sold.

GM is betting on Obozo killing Keystone oil pipeline, closing the Gulf again, keeping E&W Coast off limits to drilling so as to get US gas prices up to the European level around $8 a gallon. So smile, you voted for it, along with GM.
