San Francisco Bay area transit considers imposing a mileage tax

GasBuddy Blog -- Under a proposal that is in its early stages, San Francisco Bay area drivers could be required to install GPS-like odometers or other devices in their vehicles and pay anywhere from a penny to 10-cents per mile driven, according to reports from AP and the Sacramento Bee.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments approved going forward with a study of a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax as part of what the AP says is "a broader environmental review of several transportation options."

The current proposal would charge motorists a tax on every mile they drive in the nine-county region as a way to raise money for roads and public transit while reducing traffic and pollution.

Anything for a buck. And while we're at perhaps we should make refusal to play along a hanging offense. Less drivers = less cars on road = less pollution. See everybody wins except the individual.

so those, who can't afford living closer due to high rent, now will have to pay more, so they are even less able to afford anything else?

if you are going to San Francisco
Be sure to put a G-P-S in your hair
If you are going to San Francisco
You are going to meet some tax people there

For those who come to San Francisco
Summer time won't be a drivin' there
In the street of San Francisco
Tax people with G-P-S in their hair

All across the nation
Such a strange vibration
No car in motion

There's whole generation
With a new traffic congestion
No car in motion
No car in motion

A GPS mileage tax is what its coming to as more and more city, counties and states consider the very same thing to recoup lost fuel tax revenue. You install the GPS device at your own expense and pay the mandated mileage fee too. Just make sure all fuel taxes are used for the repair or replacement of roads and bridges only. No fuel taxes dumped into the states general fund and siphoned off for other uses! With this system, the EV's and Inbreds will pay their fair share of road and bridge use too! If the GPS mileage tax is imposed, then the fuel tax is eliminated.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

So many politician go for the lazy answer. Just increase taxes and don't worry about efficient management. They also want to intrude on the personal rights "for the good of the people" as an excuse for their own agenda.

This will get all those greenies who currently don't contribute their "fair share" because they're using electricity instead of paying gasoline fuel taxes.

What taxes do they propose to reduce in exchange for this, so it's a revenue neutral tax hike?

No wonder Calif. is going broke. When people get this news and more like it every week they move out of calif. There goes your revenue. Just like B.o. When things go bad and there's no money raise a new tax. No more visits to california if they charge tourist this Crap for driving on their roads - used to be a great state. Others states don't need to follow this stupid lead this time.

Another day for this article on the Socialist Republic of San Francisco. They have always sought new ways to raise taxes and to secede from California and the USA. They are as far left on the fringe as you can get.

I still think this is a conspiracy by drivers of giant fuel inefficient vehicles to pay less tax. The tax-per-gallon scheme we have works well. The heavy users "use up" more of the road than the light users. The heavy users use more fuel and therefore pay more tax, which in theory goes back intoi the roads.

We do have to find a way to tax vehicles that do not use gasoline as a fuel. If the per-mile scheme is limited to them, then I am OK with it.
