In Europe, gender-neutral insurance pricing goes into effect

GasBuddy Blog -- A European court ruling has gone into effect that bans gender-based insurance pricing, an equalizing measure which auto insurers say will inflate costs for women across the European Union, who are traditionally charged less than men.

EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding said the ruling was a civil rights issue, calling it “an important moment for gender equality in the European Union.”

She even went so far as to say "It is now clear that an insurance company must not distinguish between women and men; all customers must be treated equally. This is a matter of respect for fundamental rights. It is now also becoming a matter of good business practices."

Government interfering with free enterprise again! The fact is that male drivers drive more aggressively than women and as a result have more accidents than women. Insurance companies should be free to charge prices that reflect the risk they are taking! Charging women more so that men can be charged less is unfair, and an unwarranted intrusion of government into business! Talk about your "war on women"! Sheesh!

It is a mistake to go this way and just another opportunity for Insurance companies to get more money, because you know prices are not dropping for anyone, just raising for females.

But commenting on the article again, will this not lead to higher prices for every one? If you are in business to make a profit and some one takes away part of it you need to add some place else to make up for your short fall. Also how about age discrimination for under 25 and over 65 drivers will it be necessary to take that discrimination away also. Again higher prices for every one. What ever happened to a person being responsible for their own actions and pay accordingly.
