I can't sleep in a moving vehicle, so I might as well drive. I'll never fall asleep behind the wheel.

It is very important to realize that almost all long interstate drives involve drivers that make the mistake of trying to drive through the first nod only to find they nod again a few minutes later.
Learn to recognize the symptoms leading up to your nod and pull over for a few minutes of doing anything but driving.
Personally my prevention symptom is when I notice my eyes having a hard time tracking up and down. It's a little hard to explain but it is almost as if my eyes are semi-locked in the ability to compensate for suspension travel giving me the impression that the "ride" has gone to a really stiff state except that nothing about the vehicle has changed. All that has changed is my ability to compensate for the normal driving dynamics of the vehicle.

How does this compare with the people who are fully awake but are stupid behind the wheel?

I can see it happening... People do not know how to stay awake and keep on top of themselves to prevent this.

did you know it's dangerous to drive when you have the flu? Look at the current epidemic - I bet bunches of those victims are driving all over.

A couple of electric prods in every driver's seat, set to go off every five minutes will take care of that!

Not good at all, if they kill only themselves that's okay but unfortunately they will take others with themselves.

Only one in twenty four admit it but it is probably a lot more. A lot nod off for a few seconds and do not even realize it. Ever get some where and not remember going past a familiar land mark or road junction? You probably nodded off and did not realize it. It probably has happened to most of us that spend a lot of time on the road.

There are those who admit it and those who do fall asleep and don't admint it. 1 in 24 is not an accurate number, it's accually higher.
